Eurovision 2020: Why did everything change at the last minute?

As we have written in previous articles, staging the 2020 event within the year was the real intention and a great priority for both the EBU and the Dutch government.

The scenarios of postponing the contest to the end of June or to September were till up to now prevailing, but everything changed when the host broadcaster was asked  “Can you guarantee that you will be able to host the event at the end of June or in September?”.  The answer was  of course “no”, since nobody can tell for sure at what time Europe will return to normality, and we can all imagine the financial and other ancillary damage, if the Eurovision Song Contest were to be postponed to September (for example) and then cancelled.

So this is why the EBU was forced to cancel the Eurovision Song Contest, and by cancelling the event and not postponing it, any broadcaster that wishes to return is going to be allowed to do so.
